As flowers begin to blossom, emerald hues of grass stretch vibrantly across yards and the air becomes warmer, fashion trends throughout the spring also bloom across social media.
Going into the spring season, avid shopper junior Leo Gill explains that a majority of boys tend to switch to athletic shorts and loose fitted t-shirts, while he likes to incorporate unconventional patterns or stitching to his outfits as a reflection of his character. Although he has adjusted from the winter by lessening the amount of layers he wears, he still tries to add different accessories and elements to his exterior.
For women’s fashion, athletic skirts to flowy long dresses seize the latest style according to clothing enthusiast freshman Margaret Stocks. She has noticed that this year has brought about a change in the colors people tend to wear – from neutrals and blacks to pastels such as pink, yellow and blue.
“A lot of my friends start wearing clothes that are lighter, which I like a lot more,” Stocks said. “I think it just comes from the flowers blooming and Easter coming up.”
Throughout the spring when Gill shares that he can start enjoying being outside more often, he notes that more guys are wearing jackets such as Carharts and jorts (jean shorts).
“Whenever I put my spring outfit on, I always throw on some sort of jacket over my t-shirt and my jeans that I usually wear,” Gill said. “My friends like carharts and jorts more since stores started selling them, and we all have influenced each other into liking the style.”
Although the news seasons bring about new trends, both Stocks and Gill shared that they haven’t noticed a major shift in spring styles compared to the past few years where bows and cheetah prints surged in stores like American Eagle.
“Last year, a lot of people began to be obsessed with bows, but I honestly hated that trend, along with the Cheetah print,” Stocks said. “But I think a lot more new trends will come up this year, especially with the amount of pastel clothing I have seen. The retailers will probably incorporate the aesthetic in some way or form.”
According to Gill, clothing trends change continuously throughout the season. While some guys wear similar fashion every year, Gill and his friends prefer to define their own style with finds from the local vintage flea market. Gill’s staple pieces, such as his vintage boots, came from thrifting, which holds significance to how he expresses himself.
“Fashion is always different in everyone, but it is such an impressive way to show who you are and express yourself through colors,” Gill said.
