Aromas of ethnic dishes and brownies seep the halls as students contribute to the annual school tradition of Herdsgiving. Stocking each Faith family with their favorite dishes and home-cooked meals, a line of treats pile up leaving the students’ favorites with little crumbs left behind.
A favorite of the Rost herd was a Latin dish called Ceviche, where raw shrimp is cooked in lemon acid, topped with jalapeno, mango, tomato and other vegetables. Freshman Ivan Baca, brother of Junior Ivana and freshman Rita, started the tradition a few years ago when a friend introduced him to the recipe.
“My best friend’s recipe had a great balance and was tasty, cozy and warm and reminded me of the holidays,” Ivan Baca said. “I love how I am able to be with my Faith family and sister. It brings the “family” part of Miege.”
Similarly, Rost sophomore Jadon Brown shared that her second-year experience at Herdsgiving had food much better than last year as she enjoyed some treats such as mini cheesecakes.
“My favorite part was that my whole herd was in Mrs. Haye’s room and I got to hang out with my freshman brother and my other friends,” Brown said.
Sophomore Lura Bracht in the Bohaty herd brought in cookies and Capri Suns and enjoyed brownies while walking around, making her way to the commons to play board games. She expressed that the organization in their herd made the holiday flow better this year.
“Bohaty was way more organized this year on who brought what, so there was much more to eat,” Bracht said.
The Tylicki herd enjoyed homemade chili and soda from freshman Charles Blume who expressed that trying new foods was a highlight of his first experience of this tradition.
“Herdsgiving made my year a lot better, I made two new friends at my table that I now talk to a lot,” Blume said. “It made my whole week better because I could talk to other kids my age.”
