Hello! My name is Evan Ulmer and this will be my second year on the Miegian Staff as a senior! I am very excited to be our team's Photo Editor as I have always had a strong passion for photography! I had such a blast on the photography staff last year, that I knew returning I wanted to take on an editor position. I anticipate what this year brings and what accomplishments we will achieve working with the editors and staff, and I look forward to covering all of the lively events that happen throughout my last school year at Miege!

Greeted by the seniors, freshman Khi Allen walks up the red carpet at the freshmen welcome day filled with school spirit. “I was feeling a little bit nervous but also super excited at the same time to start a new school year,” Allen said. “There was a lot of school spirit that day, especially during the herd competitions, and the whole school is super spirited.”

A Spirited Start: Freshmen students are welcomed in for new beginnings on orientation day

Eager to win, freshman William Wert participates in a Herd Competition on his first day. “I was just trying to win and the game was kind of like musical chairs, just without the chairs,” Wert said. “I have felt spirited ever since I started school and it has been pretty fun here so far.”

While not knowing what to expect, freshman Grant Gelhaus walks down the red carpet into his new school year. “Freshman orientation was super fun and it really influenced my vision of Miege,” Gelhaus said. “Miege feels pretty exciting, even though I was nervous walking down the red carpet on my first day.”

Cheering along with the upperclassmen, freshman Henry Vani is greeted by the cheering upperclassmen on orientation day. “I was feeling really excited on freshmen welcome day, I saw my friend Garrett who I went on Prayer and Action with and it was awesome,” Vani said. “All the seniors were so welcoming, and I felt so proud to finally be a Stag.”

Ready and spirited for orientation, freshman Madison Marshall is led up the red carpet by senior Maddie Roberts. “I was feeling super excited but also nervous since I didn’t really know anyone walking into the building,” Marshall said. “The day was very empowering for me, and even though I was a little nervous, it really hyped me up for my first week which has been amazing with all the new friends I have made.”

Pulling up in her parent’s car to the red carpet welcome, freshman Neva Goetz had no idea what she was walking into. “Some guy just opened my door for me, but walking down the red carpet made me feel like I really belonged because everyone was like, ‘Oh, it’s Neva,’” Goetz said.

Smiling brightly, freshman Ivan Baca is led onto the red carpet by senior Avery Kurt on Aug. 14 during the Freshmen Welcome. “I was very excited to finally be welcomed in as a student at Miege, and walking up the red carpet made me feel like a celebrity that day,” Baca said. “Everyone was so happy to greet the new freshmen, and I could not believe how strong the school spirit was even on my first day.”

Filled with excitement, freshman Knox Frizzell pumps his fists as he is cheered on by the seniors at the Freshmen Welcome. “I had lots of overwhelming feelings walking into a new school with all the upperclassmen greeting me and hyping up all the freshmen,” Frizzell said. “It Was a great feeling to be welcomed into a new school and I really feel like I belong.” Frizzell said. “I even participated in a Herd Competition that day and even though I got out in the second round, it was super fun.”

As the crowd stands up for the champions, senior Livi Shull takes it all in with fellow teammates. Shull described how the new coaching staff led them to state. “They adjusted greatly to us, and we adjusted to them and it all worked out great,” Shull said. “I am so very appreciative for the coaches and my team.”

As the basketball season comes to an end, junior Kirston Verhulst thanks her coaches and team for all the hard work they have put in this year. Verhulst has been part of the state winning team since she was a freshman and is honored to be a part of the legacy. “The coaches care so much about each of the players,” Verhulst said. “Having a coaching staff that backs us up for everything we do makes us more comfortable.”

Celebrating his victory at state, senior Baker North walks around the gym to the song “Stand up for the Champions.” North won 4A wrestling state in the 285-pound weight class on February 24, and is leaving his mark on the wrestling program by being the only stag wrestler who has won state in the past five years. “I'm trying to carry on the tradition that Bishop Miege has success in every aspect of their sports,” North said. "I am trying to bring that to wrestling and give more light to wrestling in Kansas City.”

Looking back on the year, head girls basketball coach Mike Allen celebrates the teams’ incredible victories this year during the school assembly. In Allen’s first year coaching he went 22-3 and took the team all the way to the state championship. They have had the reigning title of 4A state champs since 2019, excluding 2020 when the tournament was canceled.

Driving toward the net, freshman Liam Tesmer looks up to shoot a basket at the Rockhurst basketball game on Feb. 14. Tesmer is the only starting freshman on varsity this year and has high hopes for future seasons. “Hopefully, we make it to state next year,” Tesmer said. “ That is our main goal above all else.”

Taking the lead, senior Francis Cressey takes on the part as the main character in “The Man Who Came To Dinner.” The play is a comedy by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart that takes the audience through a fun-filled story. “It was kind of surreal because I still don’t think it’s hit me yet that I am a senior,” Cressey said. “I love how close everyone is with each other and just how connected it all feels.”
